This database contains an index of bodies recovered after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.

Historical Background

Immediately after the Titanic disaster, the White Star Line chartered ships to search for and retrieve the bodies at the site of the disaster. In all, ships recovered 337 bodies. The majority of these were recovered by the Mackay-Bennett. More than 100 of the victims retrieved were buried at sea, and 209 were brought in to Halifax.

This database was extracted from fatality reports created for 328 individuals whose bodies were recovered from the disaster site. As each body was recovered, documentation was created to record distinguishing physical characteristics, personal papers, clothing, and other effects found on the bodies. These records were used to help identify each individual and ensure that next-of-kin were contacted, and the body and effects delivered to them. This database stems from these reports and can include the following details:

• name (when determined)
• status (identified/unidentified)
• gender
• age (estimated by coroner's office)
• coroner identification number (the number assigned to the body)
• physical appearance
• clothing
• effects
