About Kent County, New Brunswick Census, 1871: Eight Subdistricts
For your information, the following parishes were originally enumerated in French and were translated into English for purposes of this index: Saint Louis, Saint Mary's (Divisions 1 and 2), and Dundas (Divisions 1and 2).
Research Tip: Often, the enumerator spelled names phonetically; therefore, it is important to check spelling variations. For example, Rufe and Roof; Bourke and Bourque; Jermane and Germane; and Bastarash or Bastrash are pronounced the same, but are spelled differently. Additionally, names such as Melanson are also found spelled Melancon, Molonson, etc. Also, enumerators' handwriting was often hard to decipher; therefore, it may help to check different spellings entirely. As a guideline for lowercase letters: r can sometimes look like an n; m like an n and vice versa; n like u; and c like e. For capital letters, P, B, and R often look similar, as do S, L, J, I, and T.
