Bessarabia, Russia, Jewish Revision Lists, 1837-1952

The Reviska Skazka (Revision Lists) were censuses conducted in territories ruled by the Russian Czar in the 18th and 19th centuries. The lists enumerated only those individuals subject to taxation, and data was also utilized for identifying men to draft into the army. There were ten known major Reviska Skazka taken. The Revision Lists were first recorded in 1772; Revision Lists were revised or updated, sometimes several times, until the next census was recorded.

This database currently contains more than 56,000 records from various Revision Lists, primarily from Bessarabia. Entries may include the following details:

• father (father's given name, derived from the patronymic)
• relationship to head of household
• sex
• age
• age at last revision (only for men)
• reason left
• year left
• comments
• former registration number
• day, month, and year of registration (according to the Julian calendar)
• uyezd (district)
• gubernia — Bessarabia
• type of record — Revision List or Additional Revision List
• archive / fond / inventory / file (archival source citation at the Moldova State Archives in Chisinau = MoldSA)
• LDS microfilm number (microfilm number at the LDS Family History Library)
