About Savannah, Georgia, City Council Minutes, 1790-1900

If your ancestor had any dealings with the city of Savannah, you may find a record of it in these city council minutes. Those applying for a government or police position, vendors seeking licenses, residents petitioning to make property improvements or for tax relief were all noted in the records of the council. Transfers, leases, and purchases of city property were also recorded, as well as many other transactions, including salaries and payments to those who rendered services to the city. Complaints lodged against those in violation of city ordinances were mentioned; infractions noted include refusing to have a chimney swept, keeping a disorderly house, or killing hogs in the city at night.

This collection is currently only browsable, but there are indexes that are alphabetical, then by date at the start of each volume. The index includes the name of the petitioner, the date, and subject of the petition. Use the date to browse to the minutes of the proceedings in the volumes.
