About Indiana, U.S., Birth Certificates, 1907-1944

This database includes birth records for more than 2 million children born in the State of Indiana between 1907 and 1940. Information contained in the searchable index typically includes:

  • Child's full name
  • Sex
  • Birth date
  • Birth place
  • Registration year
  • Full names of both parents
  • Birth certificate number

In addition, birth records will generally also contain the following information:

  • Child:time of birth, hospital
  • Father:race, birthplace, age, occupation
  • Mother:race, birthplace, age, occupation, residence

Sometimes, birth records may also list the parents' length of residence in the community, length of pregnancy, marital status, number of other living children, number of other deceased children, or number of children born dead.

Modern birth records are extremely valuable and contain much more information than earlier birth records. Many researchers, learning birth information from home sources, fail to obtain birth certificates. This is most unfortunate and can result in an inaccurate or incomplete family genealogy. The original record will often include information that may not be found elsewhere.
