About Iowa, U.S., Death Records, 1880-1972
This database consists of records from two subseries of Iowa Death records from the State Historical Society of Iowa, State Archives, RG 48 Public Health, Vital Statistics:
1). Deaths, 1880- June 1904.
Iowa began recording deaths on July 1, 1880. Deaths are recorded in registers bound by year and arranged by county. Information entered for each death includes: name of deceased, date and place of death, gender, age, cause of death and burial site. Registers may include additional information; however, the names of father and mother and their birthplaces are not included.
2). Deaths, 1921-1951.
Iowa began using the certificate format to record deaths in 1904. From 1921-1929, death certificates are arranged alphabetically by county and then year; and from 1930-1951 they are arranged by year and then by county. Basic information entered includes: name of deceased, date and place of birth, date and place of death; father's name and place of birth, mother’s maiden name and place of birth, cause of death and burial site. Certificates may include additional information.
