About Halle, Germany, Thadden Regiment, Muster Roll, 1752 and 1792

About this collection

This collection contains the muster roll (Stammrolle 1792) for the 3rd Prussian Infantry Regiment stationed in Halle in 1792. It also contains a list of officers for the year 1752 (Rangliste Offiziere 1752). The regiment was named after its commander Major General Johann Leopold von Thadden. The collection also contains an alphabetical index to the muster roll (Register zur Stammrolle 1792) as well as a transcription (Transkription zur Stammrolle 1792). Halle, also known as "Halle on the Saale," was already a major city by 1890. It is situated in the modern German state of Saxony-Anhalt about 25 miles northwest of Leipzig. The first documentary mention of Halle was in 806. It was chartered in 961 and developed rapidly into an important trade center for salt and fabrics. Halle is the seat of one of the oldest universities in Germany. One of the city's notable landmarks on the market square is the Rote Turm (Red Tower), a clock tower built in 1506. In 1701 it became part of the Kingdom of Prussia.

What you can find in the records

The 1792 muster roll is divided into the military units that made up the regiment and contains:

  • A list of officers showing Service Grade, Last Name, Given Name, Age, Homeland, Length of Service and Period of Service within the regiment.
  • A corresponding list of officer cadets and "under staff" (e.g. chaplains, quartermasters, gunsmiths).
  • A personnel list of soldiers in each company. These include details such as Given Names, Last Name, Physical Measurements, Period of Service. Birthplace, Province, Religion, Number of Wars, Wounds, Occupation, Family Status, Children (male, female), if Disabled.

The officers list from 1752 comprises 3 pages and contains Last Names, Given Names, Service Grade, Homeland and Period of Service.

The index to the muster roll is an older handwritten name listing arranged alphabetically by first letter of last name with a cross-reference to the page number in the muster roll. The index was written in a re-purposed ledger book and the column headings at the top of each page are irrelevant.

The transcription of the muster roll was printed by the archive in 2012 and is best way of accessing the information in the roll.
