About Delmenhorst, Germany, Births, 1876-1901

This collection includes civil birth records from Delmenhorst, beginning in 1876 and continuing through 1901. Located in Lower Saxony just west of Bremen, Delmenhorst is an urban area that grew from a town that dates back to the 14th century.

Initially, registrations of births, marriages, and deaths were kept by religious denominations, but a civil registry modeled on the French system was implemented on 1 October 1874 in Prussian provinces and throughout the German Empire on 1 January 1876.

What You Can Find in the Records

These records are on standard forms that changed slightly through the years; however, the information recorded is generally the same:

  • child: name, birth date and time, gender
  • mother: name, residence, religion
  • witness: name, residence, religion (the witness is rarely the father, but may be a nurse, sister, mother or some other relative)
