Hungary, Jewish Names in Property Tax Census, 1828

Historical Background:

The 1828 Hungarian Property Tax Census is a census of individuals owning taxable property. The census listed the individuals and their taxable holdings. Entries were handwritten in Latin and column headings on the census forms were pre-printed in Latin. The entire country of Hungary was included. County and town names are the Hungarian names in use in 1828.

The Census included both Jews and non-Jews. Jews were specifically identified with the term “Jud” or “Judaus” before or after their name. In some instances, other terms such as Jude, Judens, Hebr, Izr, Zsido, or Mos may have been used. Sometimes the Jews were listed with only their first name, or only their last name.

About the Database:

The database includes all those names in the census marked as Jewish, and other names deemed by the transcribers to be “Jewish-sounding”, based on a combination of the surname and given name. The total number of records in the database is 29,969. Information contained in the database includes:
