General James Wilkinson became commanding general of the U.S. Army in 1796. His duties were widespread, and he traveled extensively throughout the rapidly expanding United States, visiting forts, deploying troops, and negotiating with Native Americans. This database contains his book of general and special orders, which has been indexed as port of the World Archives Project. His orders include details of court martials, troop deployments, lists of soldiers and officers, and insights into the business of the U.S. military in the post-Revolutionary years.

Wilkinson’s long and storied career was shadowed by suspicions of treasonous dealings with Spain, which were proven after his death.
