These records include original in-letters, reports of inspectors, etc., relating to the administration of convict, ship and local prisons and to their inmates. The series includes papers relating to criminal lunatics at Bethlem Hospital, 1823 to 1835, and a journal of the prison ship Mandarin, 1843.

Records may include name, residence, age, trial or conviction details, crime, and similar details. Many of the records are correspondence dealing with prison administration.
