About Oklahoma, Historical Indian Archives Index, 1856-1933

This collection contains an index to a collection of titles held by the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS). OHS archivists created the index on cards over a number of years, drawing information from a variety of sources, all of which are located at OHS. You can use the information from these cards to access materials in the OHS collections, which hold a wealth of material on tribes living in the state, including the Five Civilized Tribes.

Most of the cards deal with subjects rather than individuals. Examples of the types of references you can find include censuses, missionaries, permits for doctors, Indians in specific tribes, elections, legislators, chiefs, teachers, businesses, trading posts, schools, and the Cherokee Nation. The records indexed by these cards may provide both facts and context for your ancestors’ lives.
